Tiktok is now live again
Less than 24 hours after the app went offline, TikTok said that it was restoring its services in the US after nationwide ban. Ahead of Donald Trump’s reelection, the app’s future has become a hot political topic, and Trump has been vowing to find a way to bring it back to life. According to reports, Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok, has also been asked to attend Trump’s inauguration and sit alongside other tech sector VIPs.
Trump’s pledge may be hard to fulfill given the TikTok prohibition law, which has withstood a Supreme Court appeal. Generally speaking, executive orders cannot supersede or undo laws approved by Congress. Trump has recently shown support for the app after attempting to outlaw it during his first time in office.

However, Trump pledged Sunday morning to extend the closure deadline by issuing an executive order on Monday, following his inauguration. This would provide time to “negotiate a deal to safeguard our national security” and maintain the app’s functionality in the United States.
In April of last year, the US Congress approved a bill that was supported by all parties. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent firm located in China, was given a warning to sell the app or risk of getting banned. Among other things, Trump claimed to have discussed TikTok with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week.

When users tried to launch the app early on Sunday, they were either prompted to exit the app or a pop-up message directed them to a website with information on the ban. On Sunday, some users were able to view TikTok using a web browser. On Sunday, TikTok users were able to see and retrieve their data after the restriction.
